Manu ‘ōiwi (native birds) are some of the most beautiful in all the world, with plumage revered by chiefs and lei makers of old. They are the gems of our forests. Unfortunately, due to introduced pests such as rats, cats and pigs, along with invasive plants that overtake our native flora, many of our manu ‘ōiwi have gone extinct and nearly all still remaining are endangered and protected by law. We believe that a healthy forest is one with plenty of birds, for they are the indicators of what it means to thrive.
